Asami Sato is a nonbending engineer and business leader in Team Avatar. Her skills, resources and relationship with Korra are central to her role.
What Asami contributes
Asami does not need an element to take part in the group's conflicts. Engineering, driving, planning and close-range equipment give her practical ways to help. Her connection to Future Industries also puts family and industrial power inside the story.
Her father and the Equalists
Book 1 links her family directly to the Equalist conflict. The important distinction is between her father's choices and her own: treating Asami as merely the daughter of a wealthy antagonist erases the decisions she makes about whom to support.
Korra and Asami — finale spoilers
Korra and Asami's relationship becomes romantic. The television ending places them together as they leave for the spirit world, and Turf Wars continues their relationship explicitly. It is not necessary to rely on a fan theory to describe them as a couple.
Where to continue
Finish all four television books before reading Turf Wars. The comics continue the characters' lives rather than retelling the first season. Seychelle Gabriel provides Asami's English voice; Mako's earlier relationship with her is a separate part of the story.
