From pro-bending to a wider role

Mako enters Korra's story through the Fire Ferrets pro-bending team. His firebending includes lightning generation, but his importance to the story also comes from his practical instincts and responsibility toward Bolin.

Family and relationships

Mako and Bolin are brothers with different bending disciplines. Mako's romantic relationships with Asami and Korra are part of the early series, but neither should be used as a substitute for describing the women's later relationship with each other.

Work beyond the arena

Mako later works in Republic City's police force. That role makes investigations and public duty part of his story, beyond the competition that first introduces him. Read the books in order to follow that change rather than expecting the pro-bending setup to remain the whole series.

Name and voice

The English voice actor is David Faustino. The character name should not be confused with Mako Iwamatsu, the original voice of Iroh in The Last Airbender. For a side-by-side list of the principal Korra performers, use the cast directory.
